There Came a Knock at the Door

by Sandy Apuan

There came a knock at the door -
In the dead of night it did come,
as a thief without warning it did come.
There came a knock at the door -
Unexpected as the first pangs of childbirth,
this knock came fast and hard upon my door.
There came a knock at my door -
So consistent did it come,
as a pompadour beseeching the lover.
There came a knock at my door -
Silently stood I at the threshold,
my mind reeling as one driven mad by fear and doubt.
There came a knock at the door -
There they stood so solemn and noble,
soldiers in green with faces ashen as fine gray dust.
There came a knock at the door -
My heart broke, my heart died, it sorely died,
it died as the suns of the universe do when they are no more.
There came a knock at the door -
This knock evermore resonates agonizingly in my ears,
this an everlasting pain, now that you have gone from me.

I really like your poem! It has so muck emotion in it. Did you use the Poe theme to create it? I love how you say your soul was ripped from you. Its amazing. KEEP WRITING your good!

This has to be the most intersting piece of poetry I have ever read! Repetitive use of a catchy phrase, the word choice is astonding, and the meaning is elusive, while still graspable. The tone leaves on a note of longing, and sadness. The word choice, as I said, is amazing, and shows this is a longing for someone. Regarding the true meaning, I would guess it is a loss of something close to the speaker. Also, I guess it is a person because of the phrase, "unexpected as the first pangs of child birth". At last, I guess the person died because of "this an everlasting pain, now that you have gone from me". That is what I get from this astounding piece of poetry.

Good comments, folks! If you really like this poem, tell Mrs. Apuan in room 548. She wrote it for her son who was killed in combat last year.

That wsa an amazing poem. I was blown away by the structure. The rhyme scheme reminded me alot of the raven by Edgar Allen Poe. I actually visioned someone standing there looking at the door because someone is knocking at it. I think you should perhaps maybe publish this in a contest it is excellent.

That was a awesome poem. If you want some more advice I would not use the word door so much but other than that the poem was good.

Wow... I thought this poem was amazing... and I love how you say there came a knock because that's what the military does, they go to your house at all hours. And like everyone has been saying it reminds me of "the Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe.

I also loved how you said they stand solemn and noble, and also how you said that your heart broke, died, and by that, we can all kind of feel your pain. AMAZING.

And I am sorry for your son and I hope he rests in peace.

Mis. Apuan! Poor thing. It would be soooo sad to loose someone you loved in war like that.
