There came a knock at the door -
In the dead of night it did come,
as a thief without warning it did come.
There came a knock at the door -
Unexpected as the first pangs of childbirth,
this knock came fast and hard upon my door.
There came a knock at my door -
So consistent did it come,
as a pompadour beseeching the lover.
There came a knock at my door -
Silently stood I at the threshold,
my mind reeling as one driven mad by fear and doubt.
There came a knock at the door -
There they stood so solemn and noble,
soldiers in green with faces ashen as fine gray dust.
There came a knock at the door -
My heart broke, my heart died, it sorely died,
it died as the suns of the universe do when they are no more.
There came a knock at the door -
This knock evermore resonates agonizingly in my ears,
this an everlasting pain, now that you have gone from me.
